The West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) in humans. It was first reported in the United States in the fall of 1999 and presents a threat to humans, birds, and other vertebrates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases collects information on the occurrence of WNV and works to develop improved methods for disease diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, and control. For 2002 through 2004, WNV surveillance activities included monitoring human, wild bird, veterinary, sentinel chicken flock, and mosquito cases. WNV activity was reported to the CDC through the ArboNET surveillance network which is a web-based surveillance data network comprising 55 State and local public health departments and CDC.

The data used to create these maps in the National Atlas of the United States is not available for release by either the National Atlas or the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The CDC provided the data for these map layers. The CDC obtains the data from State health departments that have agreed with the CDC on public dissemination of that data in certain forums: National Atlas and USGS maps, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC Web site, and select scientific publications. For more information please contact the Centers for Disease Control West Nile Virus Surveillance Team (email: dvbid@cdc.gov).

The West Nile Virus Surveillance 2002-2004 map layers show the occurrence of human, wild bird, and veterinary cases and also indicate areas for which no reports were received. The map layers do not include sentinel chicken flocks or mosquito cases. Information is reported for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additional information on WNV is available from the CDC West Nile virus page and the National Wildlife Health Center West Nile Virus Project page. Please note that the 2004 maps show information accurate as of June 22, 2005.

The National Atlas also includes West Nile Virus map layers for 2000 and 2001, showing human, wild bird, veterinary, sentinel chicken, and mosquito cases. These map layers can be viewed through the Map Maker and are also available for download from the National Atlas Raw Data Download page. USGS maps of West Nile virus occurrences from 2001 to 2005 are available on the USGS West Nile Virus Maps page.
